Cross-flow Scrubbers
Cross-flow scrubbers are packed scrubbers in which there is a horizontal gas flow instead of a vertical gas flow. However, the water still flows downwards by gravity. Frequently, the shell is rectangular in the cross section, and the packing is held between two grids. The water from the sump is pumped back to the top of the packing.

These scrubbers have the same advantages and disadvantages as packed scrubbers, but are less efficient. The advantages of a cross-flow scrubber are the low profile when headroom is limited, as well as the ability to access the fan on ground level with minimal ducting.
